What a Professional Small-Business Website Really Costs

Why quotes range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands, and how to tell what you actually need.

If you've asked around about a new website, you've probably heard prices from $500 to $50,000. Both can be "right." The difference is what you're actually buying.

What drives the price

1. Custom design vs. a template. A template is cheap because the design work is already done, and shared with thousands of other sites. Custom design is built around your customers, your brand and the actions you want visitors to take.

2. Number of pages and content. Every page needs structure, design, copy and images. A focused 6–8 page site costs far less than a 40-page site with location and service pages.

3. Features and integrations. Online booking, CRM connections, e-commerce, member logins and custom calculators all add development and testing time.

4. Quality you can't see. Fast load times, accessibility for users with disabilities, technical SEO, security hardening and clean, maintainable code don't show up in a screenshot, but they decide whether your site performs.

Typical ranges

For a custom, professionally built site from an established studio, you can expect roughly:

  • Small business sites (up to ~8 pages): starting around $4,500
  • Professional sites with integrations, a blog and advanced SEO: starting around $12,500
  • Enterprise sites and web apps: typically $35,000 and up, quoted after discovery

Don't forget ongoing costs

Domain, hosting and, most importantly, maintenance. Software updates, backups and security monitoring protect your investment. A care plan is usually far cheaper than fixing a hacked or broken site.

The bottom line

The cheapest website is often the most expensive one if it doesn't bring in business. Start with your goals, get a written scope and make sure you'll own what you pay for.
